Outdoor installations often involve a tight sequence of layout, drilling, post setting and construction. A product that sets hard in approximately 20 to 40 minutes can shorten delays and reduce the time a freshly aligned post remains vulnerable to movement.
Fast setting does not mean the post is immediately ready for every load. Follow the manufacturer’s curing directions and wait at least the specified time before building on or applying heavy loads to the post. Cooler conditions may require additional curing time.

Remove loose soil, roots and debris before setting the post. In loose or sandy soil, or where the design calls for it, use an appropriate concrete form and follow the structural detail rather than relying on a basic dry-pour installation.
Alignment and bracing come first
Position the post and check it for plumb on two adjacent faces. Then brace it securely so it cannot twist or move while the concrete absorbs water and begins to set.
Recheck line, spacing, height and plumb immediately before adding water. With a fast-setting product, there is very little time to correct a mistake afterward.
Using the dry-pour method correctly
Where the manufacturer’s no-mix method is appropriate, place the dry material evenly around the braced post, keep the top of the concrete below finished grade as directed, and add the measured amount of clean water.
Allow the water to saturate the material fully. For deeper holes, place and wet the mix in lifts according to the product instructions rather than assuming water will penetrate the full depth evenly.
Special care for structural deck footings
A structural or load-bearing deck footing is different from a typical fence post. The footing must follow the approved design, permit requirements and product instructions for structural applications.
Quikrete’s own guidance calls for forms and a structural footing procedure for load-bearing deck-post applications and for posts in sandy soil. Never substitute a quick dry-pour method when the drawings or inspector require a formed, mixed or specified-strength footing.
Long-term stability
Concrete choice is only one part of post performance. Proper depth, drainage, soil conditions, post material and protection from trapped moisture all affect resistance to Ottawa’s freeze-thaw cycles.
Finish the installation so water drains away from the post. For wood posts, use suitable pressure-treated material and follow the project detail intended to reduce moisture-related decay.
