When to Stain Cedar — Timing, Weather and Product Choice

How long to wait on new cedar

New cedar should weather 3 to 6 months before its first coat so mill glaze wears off and moisture content drops. Kiln-dried cedar can often be stained within a few weeks. The reliable test: sprinkle water on the board. If it beads, wait. If it soaks in within 30 seconds, the wood is ready.

The Ottawa weather window

Aim for late May through September, on a stretch with two dry days on either side of the job. Ideal conditions are 10–27 °C, low humidity, and out of direct midday sun — stain that flashes dry on a hot board sits on the surface instead of soaking in.

Choosing a stain type

The more pigment a stain carries, the longer it lasts and the more it hides grain.

• Transparent — shows full grain, re-coat every 1–2 years
• Semi-transparent — the usual choice for cedar, 2–3 years
• Semi-solid — 3–4 years, mutes grain
• Solid — 4–6 years, looks like paint and cannot be reversed

Prep matters more than product

Clean with a dedicated wood cleaner, not bleach, which breaks down the fibre. Rinse, let dry a full 48 hours, then lightly sand any fuzzed areas. Apply thin coats and back-brush so the stain is worked into the grain rather than pooled on top.
